The race is on at Witham St Hughs!
Sport Relief 2014: Join in the fun and games
It’s time to dig out that running kit! Sport Relief is here again. On Sunday 23rd March the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile will be setting off from Witham St Hughs Village Hall at midday, with hundreds of locals getting on their marks, set and go for Sport Relief. But there’s still time to bag a place – and a Sainsbury’s Lincoln goody bag, and enter the fun and games, with a choice of one, three or six miles.
Michelle Mortimer, Chair of Witham Runners, organising the event, said: “We are delighted that so many people have already signed up, but we want even more people to accept the challenge in Witham St Hughs and make it the best Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile yet. There will be plenty of activities on the day so don’t forget to rope in your friends, family and colleagues too!”
Children at Witham St Hughs Academy are already showing lots of enthusiasm for Sport Relief, and have held a special assembly where Paralympic T34 wheelchair athlete Jamie Carter talked to them about his achievements in the London 2012 Paralympic Games and inspired them as they raise money for Sport Relief culminating with a fundraising day at school on 21st March, and the Witham St Hughs Mile event on 23rd, where Jamie will be returning to Witham St Hughs as a very special guest to start the eager mile participants and talk to people about his achievements.
“It’s not just all about running on the day,” continues Michelle, “the event will be open between 11am and 4pm, with plenty of other sports-related activities. Listen out for the marching drummer band to mark the start of the day’s activities, which include: demonstrations by Cobra Elite Cheerleading; sports massages from Sporting Chance; hockey, tennis, cricket, crazy catch AND an assault course by Hurricane Sports; an introduction to squash and racketball; rounders games hosted by the ladies ABC’s; football coaching by Active Soccer and our own Witham FC, and even sports-related crafts.” The day is supported by Sainbury’s Lincoln branch, and there will be an opportunity to meet Paralympian and wheelchair athlete Jamie Carter, as well as talk to your local running club, Witham Runners, and sign up for their forthcoming Couch to 5k challenge too!
So on Sunday 23rd it’s over to you to come together and take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games, and places on the main running events are limited, so sign up quickly!
